A day in the Malvern Hills: Hiking, Hilarity and a Hungry Dog

Picture this: you're standing on top of the hill, the wind tousling your hair, a breathtaking panorama before you. Sounds dreamy, right? Welcome to the Malvern Hills—where history meets hilarity and every hiker's misstep is just another tale to tell. If you're looking for an adventure that blends stunning scenery with a dash of unexpected events , this is the place to be.

This time my journey began at the Clock Tower car park on North Malvern Road. Armed with sturdy hiking boots (a must, trust me),few layers of clothes I set off with the enthusiasm and curiosity .Weather forecast was as reliable as a weather-vane in a tornado, promising everything from drizzle to tropical sunshine. But hey-ho, with a mix of excitement and trepidation, I embarked on the literally “up and down, up and down” hike route.

As I ascended the first summit, the panorama was simply gorgeous. From the highest points, I could see the Severn Valley, the hills of Herefordshire, and even the distant Welsh mountains. Someone told me that on a clear day, you might spot parts of thirteen counties, the Bristol Channel, and the cathedrals of Worcester, Gloucester, and Hereford. Hmmm, not today…..

Every single summit on my way offered stunning views, but be warned: the hike is sometimes challenging. The trail’s undulating nature can feel like you're on a perpetual rollercoaster of inclines and descents. The trails are well-marked, but that doesn't mean you won't find yourself taking the scenic route (read: getting lost).

Around midway through, I paused to rest and enjoyed my packed lunch. While I was eating and admiring the views a local dog appeared out of nowhere and made off with my sandwich- A moment of pure, unadulterated hilarity – for everyone else around, that is. Also the weather was shifted from a gentle drizzle to a sweltering tropical heat, keeping me on toes and frequently changing in and out of layers. What a great lunch break, that was 😆

At 425 meters, Worcestershire Beacon is the highest point. The views were so stunning you would try to capture them with your phone, only to have it died mid-photo 🙄. (Pro tip: bring a fully charged device or a sketchpad if you're feeling artistic!)

Six hours later, weary but triumphant, I descended back to the car park. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as I reflected on the day. Despite the challenges the Malvern Hills had given me an unforgettable experience. ! A breathtakingly beautiful 17.5-kilometer circular trail nestled in the English countryside, perfect for a day’s hike. This follows the various summits along the top of the Malvern ridge, offering spectacular views over Herefordshire to the west and Worcestershire to the east. This trail will have you scaling multiple peaks, each with its own set of challenges. From unexpected rain showers that turn the path into a mudslide to a dog who ate your lunch, it was definitely a unique experience!

The Malvern Hills are a gem of the English countryside, offering a mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and unexpected adventures. Whether you're there for the stunning views or the sheer joy of hiking, make sure you're prepared for anything. And hold onto your sandwiches!
