Stunning Jurassic Coast: Enjoying My first road trip with teenage kids
For our adventure, we decided to park at Lulworth Cove, a
picturesque spot that serves as an ideal starting point. The parking fee might
seem steep at £20 for the day, but trust me, it's worth every penny. The
convenience of being right next to such incredible scenery makes it a
no-brainer.
We began our day with a hearty breakfast at a café right by the cove. Yes, the prices were a bit on the commercial side, but the view of the cove while sipping coffee was priceless-ABSOLUTELY!. If you’re on a budget or just prefer a quieter start, packing your own breakfast and setting up on the beach is a great alternative—especially if you're traveling with teenagers whose appetites seem endless!
Once we were fuelled up, we set off on a hike along the cliffs towards the Fossil Forest. The trail was steep in parts but generally moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most hikers. It took us about an hour to reach our destination, but we took our time, stopping often to take in the breathtaking views. We were fortunate to have perfect weather, with sunny skies and clear visibility, which made the experience even more special.
The Fossil Forest itself is a fascinating place. The
rocky landscape is filled with ancient remains, offering a unique glimpse into
the distant past. My son, who has a keen interest in fossils, could have spent
the entire day exploring here. It’s one of those spots that captivates you with
both its natural beauty and its historical significance.
After soaking in the wonders of the Fossil Forest, we
made our way back to the charming village and then headed off in the opposite
direction towards Durdle Door. This part of the hike was a bit steeper, but the
effort was well worth it. After about 40 minutes, we were greeted with the
iconic view of Durdle Door—a natural limestone arch that’s become a symbol of
the Jurassic Coast.
Durdle Door is undoubtedly a must-see, but it can get
quite busy, especially on a sunny day. After admiring the arch and snapping a
few photos, we decided to retreat to the quieter beach at Lulworth Cove. Here,
we even braved the chilly waters for a refreshing swim—a perfect way to cool
off after a day of hiking.
Before we knew it, the day had flown by. From 10 AM to 7 PM, we covered 10 miles of hiking, enjoyed some time on the beach, swam in the sea, and took in some of the most beautiful views the Jurassic Coast has to offer. After all the £20 parking fee felt like a small price to pay for such an incredible day.
This trip was an absolute hit with my teenagers—they loved every moment of it. We’ll definitely be back to explore more of this amazing coastline. If you're planning a visit to the Jurassic Coast, make sure to include Lulworth Cove, Fossil Forest, and Durdle Door in your itinerary. You won’t be disappointed!
