Dawn Trek: Hastings to Rye
By the time I reached the first summit , the sun began to emerge from the mist. Below me, the sea sparkled in the distance, and the mist dissipated, revealing the rugged beauty of the coastline. I just had to have a little break there, just to stop, have a sip of water and admire the view.
The cliffs themselves are dramatic—towering chalk faces that drop into the sea, with views stretching for miles. I took plenty of breaks to take it all in, watching the waves crash far below . Every so often, the path would dip down into a valley, only to rise again, offering fresh perspectives of the coastline.
Halfway through my journey, I stumbled upon Fairlight, a small village nestled between the cliffs. A perfect spot for a break, with a charming cafe just off the main path. The cafe, simple but welcoming, served up hot tea and freshly baked scones—an ideal pick-me-up after a few hours of hiking. There’s something about sitting in a small village cafe, watching the world wake up, that just adds to the adventure.
Further along, I passed through Winchelsea, another historic village with narrow lanes and medieval charm. There are a few more cafe options here if you’re in need of a rest. The surrounding countryside is rich with history, and you can feel the centuries of stories seeping from the stones of these old villages.
As the afternoon crept in, I descended from the cliffs into flatter terrain, with the medieval town of Rye now in sight. It’s a beautiful approach, with the rolling fields gradually giving way to the town’s ancient rooftops and winding streets. The sense of accomplishment started to build as I crossed the last few miles.
The hike from Hastings to Rye is about 12 miles (19 kilometers), a stretch that takes around 5 to 6 hours depending on your pace and how many stops you make. The path undulates over cliff tops, with some fairly steep ascents and descents, but it’s nothing too technical. Moderate fitness is enough to manage the route, though you’ll definitely feel your legs working during the steeper sections.
The hike from Hastings to Rye is one of contrasts—starting in the mist, rising above the cliffs as the sun breaks through, passing through sleepy villages, and ending in the enchanting town of Rye. The route can be challenging in parts, especially with the steep climbs, but the views and the tranquility of the journey make it more than worthwhile.
By the time I finished, my legs were tired, but my spirit was refreshed. There’s something magical about a morning spent with only the sound of your own footsteps and the distant crash of waves to keep you company. This is a hike that stays with you long after you’ve left the cliffs behind.
