Lost and Found: Changing Course on My White Cliffs Hike Adventure

I set off on my adventure, climbing the first cliff in Dover. Huffing and puffing 😆, I reached the top of one of the many cliffs, admiring the breathtaking views and feeling like a champion! As I walked further, I bumped into a park guide and asked for the best route from Dover to Folkestone. He looked at me like I’d asked for directions to Narnia!? and clearly suggested I head to Deal instead- which is in the opposite direction! He assured me the views would be spectacular…and let me tell you, the scenery was indeed stunning. I could fully immerse myself in the natural beauty of the area.

Then came the real adventure. I decided to take a detour down to the beach at St Margaret's Bay and promptly got lost. But hey-ho, the bay was beautiful and rather peaceful, with a local restaurant/cafe called “Coastguard on the Bay,” a perfect place for a little top-up on coffee and a cheeky ice cream by the beach. Feeling mindful yet energized, I realized that I had no idea how to get back up to the cliff—oops! Thankfully, a group of graceful ladies with walking sticks came to my rescue. They swooped in, all calm and collected, and pointed me back in the right direction.

The whole trek took around four hours and spanned over 10 miles, and it was well worth the effort!. Every now and then, my phone would randomly switched to French roaming, which kept messing with the time and tracking of my route, making me think I was either too fast or too slow(Don't let this mislead you!)

The White Cliffs of Dover, with their stunning beauty, offer an unforgettable day trip from London. The journey by train is straightforward, taking around an hour from the heart of the city. If you prefer to drive, it’s about the same amount of time. Whether you're planning to head towards Deal or Folkestone, direct trains make the return journey to London a breeze. This flexibility allows you to plan your hike according to your preferences, knowing that you'll have no trouble getting back to the city. For the more adventurous and physically fit, there’s the option to undertake a loop hike. This route brings you full circle, right back to your starting point and car park 😉

Guess which option I chose?
